Parfois deux, parfois cinq, parfois pas. Mais je dirais en moyenne une bonne centaine par an. La plupart du temps, quand on s\u2019adresse \u00e0 moi avec un minimum de formes, je r\u00e9ponds et je donne mon impression premi\u00e8re, rapide, sans aucun engagement r\u00e9ciproque, et j\u2019explique bien que mon avis n\u2019a aucune valeur juridique ou financi\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Je n\u2019ai jamais demand\u00e9 un centime pour ces avis, que je veux bienveillants \u2013 mais qui sont parfois mal per\u00e7us. Je le comprends. On pense ou esp\u00e8re avoir trouv\u00e9 un tr\u00e9sor, et voil\u00e0 qu\u2019un type qu\u2019on ne connait pas vous explique qu\u2019on n\u2019a rien trouv\u00e9 du tout. Je comprends aussi que mes avis ne sont pas pris pour argent comptant et que mes interlocuteurs r\u00e9sistent \u00e0 mes conclusions. Au fond, \u00e7a ne change rien pour moi et le seul v\u00e9ritable juge, dans ces cas, c\u2019est le march\u00e9\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Il m\u2019est arriv\u00e9 deux ou trois fois d\u2019avoir un d\u00e9but de doute sur ce qu\u2019on me soumettait, mais \u00e7a n\u2019a jamais dur\u00e9. Pourtant, j\u2019aimerais beaucoup pouvoir participer \u00e0 la d\u00e9couverte d\u2019un Van Gogh perdu !<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Avec la fondation de la Van Gogh Academy m\u2019est venue une id\u00e9e qui pour mettre tout le monde d\u2019accord\u00a0: \u00e0 ceux qui me soumettent des \u0153uvres pour expertise, je propose de publier sur notre site un petit article consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 leur trouvaille. J\u2019y expose les arguments qui motivent mon avis, avec une reproduction de ce qu\u2019ils m\u2019envoient. Libre \u00e0 chacun, sur cette base, de se faire sa propre opinion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Depuis que je propose cette formule, je n\u2019ai obtenu qu\u2019un seul accord, au sujet d\u2019une toile tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressante, objet de ce premier article du genre\u00a0: une copie d\u2019un portrait c\u00e9l\u00e8bre, que Van Gogh avait intitul\u00e9 <em>Le Po\u00e8te<\/em>. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019une pi\u00e8ce majeure de l\u2019\u0153uvre de Van Gogh\u00a0: son premier ciel \u00e9toil\u00e9 et un portrait qui n\u2019en est pas vraiment un. Comme pour <em>La Berceuse <\/em>ou le <em>Docteur Gachet<\/em>, le peintre n\u2019a pas cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 repr\u00e9senter une personne, mais une id\u00e9e. En l\u2019occurrence, Eug\u00e8ne Boch pose en jouant un r\u00f4le\u00a0: celui d\u2019un po\u00e8te id\u00e9alis\u00e9, aux traits fins et nobles, empreint d\u2019humilit\u00e9, et dont l\u2019esprit s\u2019\u00e9vade vers l\u2019infini du firmament. J\u2019y reviendrai, mais cette toile montre que Van Gogh est avant toute autre chose un <em>symboliste du r\u00e9el.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-1 fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\"><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-left fusion-no-large-visibility fusion-no-medium-visibility fusion-no-small-visibility\"><div class=\"title-sep sep- sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#e0dede;\"><\/div><\/div><span class=\"awb-title-spacer fusion-no-large-visibility fusion-no-medium-visibility fusion-no-small-visibility\"><\/span><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;--fontSize:26;--minFontSize:26;line-height:1.5;\"><p class=\"p5\">Van Gogh et Eug\u00e8ne Boch<\/p><\/h2><span class=\"awb-title-spacer\"><\/span><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-right\"><div class=\"title-sep sep- sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#e0dede;\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4 awb-text-cols fusion-text-columns-2\" style=\"--awb-columns:2;--awb-column-spacing:2em;--awb-column-min-width:380px;\"><p>Le N\u00e9erlandais avait rencontr\u00e9 Eug\u00e8ne Boch au d\u00e9but du mois de juillet 1888, vraisemblablement durant une de ses excursions du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de Fontvieille, village pittoresque \u00e0 quelques kilom\u00e8tres d\u2019Arles. Il relate sa rencontre avec l\u2019artiste belge dans une lettre \u00e0 son fr\u00e8re Theo\u00a0:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Ce Bock reste avec Mc Knight et il travaille fort parait-il. Mais n\u2019ai encore rien vu. C\u2019est un gar\u00e7on dont l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur me plait beaucoup. Figure en lame de rasoir, yeux verts, avec cela de la distinction. Mc Knight parait tr\u00e8s vulgaire \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de lui.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p><em>Arles, le 9 juillet 1888<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Le lendemain, encore sous l\u2019impression de cette rencontre, il ajoute\u00a0:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Ce Bock a un peu la t\u00eate d\u2019un gentilhomme flamand du temps des compromis des nobles du temps du Taciturne et de Marnix. Cela ne m\u2019\u00e9tonnerait pas du tout qu\u2019il f\u00fbt bon.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Moins de deux mois plus tard, le 3 septembre, Van Gogh a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 son portrait, et recommande \u00e0 Theo de lui r\u00e9server le meilleur accueil lors de sa prochaine visite \u00e0 Paris.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Tu le verras sous peu ce jeune homme \u00e0 mine Dantesque car il va venir \u00e0 Paris et en le logeant, si la place est libre, tu feras bien pour lui. Il est bien distingu\u00e9 d\u2019ext\u00e9rieur et il le deviendra je crois dans ses tableaux. Il aime Delacroix et nous avons bien caus\u00e9 de Delacroix hier, justement il connaissait l\u2019esquisse violente de la barque du Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Eh bien, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 lui \u2013 j\u2019ai enfin une premi\u00e8re esquisse de ce tableau que depuis longtemps je r\u00eave \u2013 le po\u00e8te. Il me l\u2019a pos\u00e9. Sa t\u00eate fine au regard vert se d\u00e9tache dans mon portrait sur un ciel \u00e9toil\u00e9 outremer profond, le v\u00eatement est un petit veston jaune, un col de toile \u00e9crue, une cravate bigarr\u00e9e. Il m\u2019a donn\u00e9 deux s\u00e9ances dans une seule journ\u00e9e.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Boch, avec sa mine dantesque, son aspect de gentilhomme flamand, son air distingu\u00e9 sa une t\u00eate fine a donc tout pour mener \u00e0 bien sa mission en posant pour Le Po\u00e8te. Et remarquons au passage que les titres d\u2019\u0153uvre Van Gogh s\u2019affranchissent la plupart du temps des d\u00e9sirs de leur auteur\u2026 nous y reviendrons\u00a0!<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-2 fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\"><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-left fusion-no-large-visibility fusion-no-medium-visibility fusion-no-small-visibility\"><div class=\"title-sep sep- sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#e0dede;\"><\/div><\/div><span class=\"awb-title-spacer fusion-no-large-visibility fusion-no-medium-visibility fusion-no-small-visibility\"><\/span><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;--fontSize:26;--minFontSize:26;line-height:1.5;\">Un tableau perdu\u00a0?<\/h2><span class=\"awb-title-spacer\"><\/span><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-right\"><div class=\"title-sep sep- sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#e0dede;\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5 awb-text-cols fusion-text-columns-2\" style=\"--awb-columns:2;--awb-column-spacing:2em;--awb-column-min-width:380px;\"><p>Le tableau finira dans la collection du Belge, et y demeurera jusqu\u2019en 1941, quand il est donn\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9tat fran\u00e7ais. Je n\u2019ai pas retrouv\u00e9 la date \u00e0 laquelle il a \u00e9t\u00e9 donn\u00e9 ou vendu \u00e0 Boch, ni par qui. \u00c9tait-ce Theo, \u00e9tait-ce sa veuve Johanna\u00a0?<\/p>\n<p>Van Gogh d\u00e9crit le tableau par deux fois dans ses lettres. La premi\u00e8re fois, le 3 septembre, le peintre \u00e9voque une \u00ab\u00a0esquisse\u00a0\u00bb pour laquelle il a eu droit \u00e0 deux s\u00e9ances de pose. Un peut donc raisonnablement supposer que l\u2019esquisse devait \u00eatre bien avanc\u00e9e. La deuxi\u00e8me fois que le tableau est \u00e9voqu\u00e9, le 8 septembre, le propos est plus \u00e9quivoque\u00a0:<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Le caf\u00e9 de nuit continue le semeur ainsi que la t\u00eate du vieux paysan et du po\u00e8te si j\u2019arrive \u00e0 faire ce dernier tableau.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Le tableau n\u2019est donc pas encore achev\u00e9 le 8 septembre, ce qui est un peu surprenant, Van Gogh n\u2019ayant pas l\u2019habitude de laisser un tableau sur le chevalet pendant quatre ou cinq jours. Mais il faut tenir compte d\u2019un petit interlude dans le cours habituel des choses\u00a0: \u00e0 la suite d\u2019un d\u00e9but de conflit avec son logeur, forc\u00e9ment inattendu, il avait pass\u00e9 trois jours et trois nuits \u00e0 peindre <em>Le Caf\u00e9 de nuit<\/em>. Une fois achev\u00e9, et le conflit apais\u00e9, il pouvait reprendre son programme l\u00e0 o\u00f9 il l\u2019avait laiss\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Ce petit flottement a fait dire qu\u2019il y aurait eu deux versions du <em>Po\u00e8te<\/em>\u00a0: une \u00e9tude et un tableau plus abouti, disparu. Dans ce contexte, l\u2019apparition d\u2019une deuxi\u00e8me version, en 2025, fait sens et la seconde (ou la premi\u00e8re) version aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 trouv\u00e9e\u00a0!<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-3 fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\"><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-left fusion-no-large-visibility fusion-no-medium-visibility fusion-no-small-visibility\"><div class=\"title-sep sep- sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#e0dede;\"><\/div><\/div><span class=\"awb-title-spacer fusion-no-large-visibility fusion-no-medium-visibility fusion-no-small-visibility\"><\/span><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;--fontSize:26;--minFontSize:26;line-height:1.5;\">Une copie plut\u00f4t qu\u2019un faux<\/h2><span class=\"awb-title-spacer\"><\/span><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-right\"><div class=\"title-sep sep- sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#e0dede;\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-6 awb-text-cols fusion-text-columns-2\" style=\"--awb-columns:2;--awb-column-spacing:2em;--awb-column-min-width:380px;\"><p>Cependant, le tableau r\u00e9apparu il y a quelques mois comporte une mention au verso, difficilement lisible\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0[P]\u00a0?] Alexandre \/ 1903\u00a0\u00bb. Or le seul \u00ab\u00a0P. Alexandre\u00a0\u00bb contemporain de cette date que je suis arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 identifier est un inspecteur honoraire belge, qui n\u2019a pas laiss\u00e9 d\u2019autres traces li\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019art de la peinture que celle-ci. En 1903, le tableau \u00e9tait vraisemblablement chez Boch \u2013 en Belgique, il est vrai, mais hors de port\u00e9e du public. P. Alexandre aurait-il \u00e9t\u00e9 en relation avec le mod\u00e8le du <em>Po\u00e8te<\/em>, et impressionn\u00e9, se serait-il laiss\u00e9 tenter par un exercice de copie ?<\/p>\n<p>Ou bien cette mention n\u2019aurait-elle rien \u00e0 voir avec la date de la r\u00e9alisation du tableau, renvoyant plut\u00f4t \u00e0 son acquisition\u00a0? La copie daterait-elle alors d\u2019une date ant\u00e9rieure\u2026 Ou est-ce une simple erreur\u00a0? Impossible de le savoir en l\u2019\u00e9tat de nos connaissances.<\/p>\n<p>En revanche, ce dont je suis assez certain, c\u2019est qu\u2019il ne s\u2019agit pas d\u2019un Van Gogh. Le N\u00e9erlandais a pourtant produit des r\u00e9p\u00e9titions \u00e0 plus d\u2019une reprise pour les offrir \u00e0 ses mod\u00e8les. Mais il ne s\u2019agissait, dans ces cas-l\u00e0, pas vraiment de copies. Van Gogh introduisait toujours des variantes, ce qui n\u2019est pas le cas pour la copie du <em>Po\u00e8te<\/em> apparu en 2025. Les \u00e9toiles sont exactement au m\u00eame endroit, et un effort est visiblement fait, pas toujours avec succ\u00e8s, pour reproduire les m\u00eames effets de carnation, de plis des v\u00eatements et de lumi\u00e8re que dans l\u2019original.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mais n\u2019est pas Van Gogh qui veut. L\u00e0 o\u00f9 le maitre sculpte la mati\u00e8re jusque dans les aplats pour accentuer les mouvements et le volume, le copiste, pourtant dou\u00e9, se contente d\u2019\u00e9taler de la couleur sur la toile. L\u00e0 o\u00f9 les touches vives et s\u00fbres de Van Gogh participent \u00e0 l\u2019effet de la barbe, de la lumi\u00e8re qui tombe sur la peau, des cheveux sur le front, le copiste pose prudemment de petits coups de brosse appliqu\u00e9s avec soin pour se rapprocher le plus possible de l\u2019original, sans y parvenir. Le dessin n\u2019est pas davantage au rendez-vous, ni m\u00eame la composition, pourtant assez servilement imit\u00e9e\u00a0: la copie est dessin\u00e9e d\u2019un trait mou, et l\u00e0 o\u00f9 Van Gogh r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 cr\u00e9er une impression de droiture et d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9vation, le copiste produit un type un peu hagard, l\u00e9g\u00e8rement avachi, aux traits tombants. Enfin, la copie a \u00e9t\u00e9 ex\u00e9cut\u00e9e avec de la peinture noire pour le ciel, ce qui \u00e9tait pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment ce que l\u2019auteur de l\u2019original voulait \u00e9viter.<\/p>\n<p>Tout cela tient \u00e0 des d\u00e9tails, mais qui constituent, mis bout \u00e0 bout, un ensemble qui rend l\u2019attribution \u00e0 Van Gogh tout \u00e0 fait impossible \u00e0 mes yeux.
